Do-It-Yourself Battery Jump
RAY: Here's the answer. I used my tool set.
TOM: This was good.
RAY: I'm sure we got plenty of people who said you're going to have to do something with the jumper cables, I mean it seemed so logical right? And the generator. And you would have been dead. The coyotes would have gotten you. What he did was very cute.
With his tool kit he slips the belt off the alternator. He then takes the electric drill and the duct tape, and duct tapes the chock of the drill to the pulley of the alternator so when he squeezes the trigger on the drill it turns the alternator.
Now plugging the drill into the generator, he sits there for 15 minutes, holds the trigger, and as the alternator spins it makes electricity to charge the dead battery. And a few minutes later he puts the belt back on, starts the thing, and off he goes leaving the generator and the drill and tools behind. So who's our winner, man?
TOM: Well, the winner is Meredith Hayman from Bozeman, Montana, and for having her answer selected at random from among all the correct answers that we got, Meredith is going to get a $26 gift certificate to the Shameless Commerce Division at cartalk.com, with which she can get one of our Car Talk recycled messenger bags.
RAY: I didn't know about these. What are they recycled from?
TOM: Well they used to be All Things Considered messenger bags. We stole a hundred of them from the supply closet.
RAY: So you just crossed out All Things Considered and wrote Car Talk?
TOM: Bingo! A recycled messenger bag. Congratulations, Meredith!
