Dear Tom and Ray:

I have a 1989 Mazda 626. When I turn on the fan to setting 1 or 2, it doesn't work. When I turn it on to setting 3 or 4, it works fine. What should I do?[redtruck.gif] Rick

Tom: I'd move to either a hotter or colder climate, Rick, so you can use your blower at high speed all the time.

Ray: Actually, the fan speed is controlled by a couple of resistors. Those resistors are switched on and off in various combinations to create the different fan speeds. And one of those resistors has gone bad.

Tom: Take the car in and have your mechanic replace the blower motor resistors. That should take care of it.

Changing your oil is the cheapest insurance you can buy for your car, but how often should you change it? Find out by ordering Tom and Ray's pamphlet Ten Ways You May Be Ruining Your Car Without Even Knowing It! To order, send (check or money order) to Ruin, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. You can also order online.
