#1309: The Pit of Despair

The car-killing crater? (Flickr/queenofthelibrary)

Original Air Date: 03.02.2013

   Best Moment 1:32

Description:
This week on Car Talk, Kerry's Boston condo came with one unfortunate feature--a large crater in the parking lot that fills with water every time it rains. She's worried that driving through this "pit of despair" every day is killing her Honda. Are those fears warranted, and does Kerry need the number for Vinny's Late Night Concrete Services, Inc.? Elsewhere, Vincent "inherited" his daughter's Jeep, along with its tendency to shake, rattle and die above 2,000 RPM; Ben needs help convincing his girlfriend that cars are impervious to wind chill factors--especially German cars; and on Stump the Chumps, we find out if Tom and Ray helped lead Kathy's son to victory in the Pinewood Derby--and, why they didn't. All this, and lots more, this week on Car Talk.

Can't believe that you didn't recognize the "Here's Your Sign" jokes as from the Blue Collar Comedy guy Bill Engvall!

A car CAN suffer from wind chill

by smedberg

Click & Clack are right that an object at ambient temperature won't be affected by wind chill, but that's not what the caller asked! He warms up his Rabbit diesel in the morning, and it's certainly gonna take longer to warm up when the wind is stronger. The engine operation adds heat to the block while the wind is taking heat away. The windier it is, the longer it's gonna take to warm up (just like the windier it is, the faster it'll cool down after you park it.)

Pit of Despair

Not a bad suggestion but I have a solution as to not disturb anyone else and to make the drivers happy. Install a sump pump that dumps the water to the nearest drain. Rich

The "I'm Stupid" Sign

Stupid people should have to wear signs that just say "I'm Stupid." Here's why.
