#0914: Panty Hose Vs. The Volcano

Original Air Date: 04.04.2009

   Best Moment

This week on Car Talk, volcano tracker Bill returns from the increasingly lava-laden shadows of Alaska's Mount Redoubt, for a round of Stump the Chumps. Did a pair of Hanes hose-top really help ash-proof his Subaru, when the volcano blew its top? Find out. Also, could a dealer actually conceal the sound of a failing muffler with... seed corn in the air filter? Plus, a sisterly prank with a spoon goes awfully awry, a turn of one wrong bolt ruins an entire brake job, and another reason not to let a guy with hairy knuckles install your new clutch. All this and more, this week on Car Talk.

You Idiots!

by AnnCSallen

I hope I have the correct show number. Listening at 9:15 a.m. CDT on WGLT - Saturday, April 11, 2009. Miriam, with back troubles, called with a recommendation for a car to replace the car she has had for 22 years. She suffers from back troubles. WHY do you ALWAYS insist on recommending foreign cars? I agree with Miriam that the Camry has a horrible ride. Had to rent one years ago. Why can't you recommend a Buick for a change? My parents have driven Park Avenues for years. They are smaller and have a much better ride than the Camry. This is based on sitting in back seat. Haven't you heard that Buick is rated in the top for reliability, especially in last couple years! It's becuase of people like you that GM is in trouble. You keep spreading the myth that American made cars are inferior! By the way, I have also enjoyed my previous Buicks and my current Lincoln Town Car for a GREAT ride; however, that car is probably too big for Miriam.

Air Quality

Hi Guys: I really like your show. I only get to listen t it, when I'm in town (about once every 3 months -- very long story). I do enjoy listening, though. However, I also have a slight"bone to pick," with you. I am middle aged, and for most of my life I was asthmatic, so jokes about inspections (especailly when there are states, like Florida, which do not CARE, at all, if you pollute their air) are really NOT funny (and very un-cool)! Other than that, it's a great show! Also, the answers to the "high-tech" questions are: the elcetricity went off at: 10:45 p.m., remained off for 20 minutes and came back on at: 11:05 p.m. Keep up the good work! Thanks, Marie Dillon (Levittown, NY)

Favorite Moment: When one of you told the lady to BUY the mechanic brownies, if she had to, that was entertaining!
