#0839: The Van Dweller of my Dreams

Original Air Date: 09.27.2008

   Best Moment

Description:
This week on Car Talk, Tara in Palo Alto wonders if she's met Mr. Right. He's good looking, he goes to medical school, he eats without too much grunting--and he lives in his 1986 VW Vanagon. Which is where Tom and Ray come in. Is his choice of domicile reason for Tara to lace up her sneakers and run, or just one more point in his favor? Also this week, a mysterious clutch malady at 2,000 feet, another victim of the "essential fuel line flush" pitch comes forward, and one sure way to get a mechanic to do a favor for you--actually, it's a dozen ways, but they're all glazed or jelly-filled. All this, plus a new puzzler from Ray's Grand Theft Auto series, an instant game of Stump the Chumps, and lots more, this week on Car Talk.

ALTHOUGH AT TIMES I HAVE HEARD YOU GIVE GOOD ADVICE YOU ALSO PUT AN UNNECESSARY STIGMA ON THE BUISNESS I HAVE CHOSEN A CAREER IN. GENTLEMAN I HAVE BEEN IN THE AUTO REAIR INDUSTRY FOR 10 YEARS. RECENTLY YOU REFERED TO THE PEOPLE IN MY INDUSTRY AS ANIMALS. A LITTLE OFFENSIVE DON'T YOU THINK. I KNOW I AND THE GUYS I WORK WITH AREN'T AND WE SHOULD BLOW IT OFF BECAUSE IT DOSEN'T REFER DIRECTLY TO US, BUT WHEN YOUR READERS SEE THIS THEY DON'T SAY "WELL NOT THE SHOP I GO TO" THEY GET AN FEAR OF THE ABILITY OF ALL AUTO REPAIR SHOPS IN GENERAL. THIS HURTS THE GOOD SHOPS, OWNERS OF THE SHOP, AND THE EMPLOYEES OF THESE FACILITIES. IN REALITY I AGREE THERE ARE SHOPS THAT ARE MORE THAN QUESTIONABLE, OR UNQUALIFIED. THEY MAKE UP ONLY ABOUT FIVE TO 15 PERCENT OF THE SHOPS OUT THERE. THAT MEANS SOME OF YOUR ADVICE HURTS THE 85 - 95 PERCENT OF THE SHOPS PERFORMING QUALITY REPAIR. THINK OF THE RAMIFICATION. HOW MAY SALARIES, AND BUISNESSES YOU ARE EFFECTING. I WOULD REQUEST THAT IN YOUR EFFORT TO ASSIST PEOPLE YOU DON'T HURT THE OTHERS TRYING TO MAKE A LIVING. I KNOW YOU HAVE THE LITTLE ASE MESSAGE AT THE END OF YOUR BROADCAST SHOW, BUT NOT IN THE PAPERS. PLEASE TRY AND BE MORE AWARE OF THE PEOPLE YOU MAY BE HURTING WHEN SPEAKING OR GIVING ADVICE. THANK YOU.
