Being an experienced mechanic myself, it is extremely difficult for me to surrender control of my vehicle repairs to someone else. I have been witness to too many cases of incompetence and price gouging. Chuck's shop is one of only two places that I currently trust. In addition to the comfort of knowing that I can count on Chuck's people to handle the work well (I can recommend George in particular as an intelligent and skilled mechanic), I can also count on them for advice and assistance in my own projects. They have patiently assisted me not only by imparting knowledge, but also by helping me do things as cheaply as possible. These guys seem to operate under the (quite correct) theory that you succeed in business by providing good service over the long run, rather than by making the most money on any given transaction. In addition to my own good experiences with Santa Monica Radiator, I have recommended them to a number of people (something I normally find as difficult at letting someone else work on my car). Without exception, the feedback I have received from my referrals has been very positive. The last person I sent there was a female friend with an infant child (no, I am not making this up) who thought she may have a serious problem with her cooling system. She was especially worried because her husband was out of town on business with their other car. Chuck checked out her Land Cruiser (a specialty of theirs - they do all the radiator work for a local Toyota dealership) and determined that the whole problem was probably just a bad radiator cap. He gave her a good used one that he had on hand (no charge) and sent her on her way. It seems that took care of the problem. She hasn't had any more cooling problems. Yep, Santa Monica Radiator is pretty cool. Pun intended.

What a great shop. The parts dept. at Santa Monica Buick on Santa Monica Blvd. wanted 115% of list for a new radiator and water pump for my 86 Buick, but Santa Monica Radiator Works was half the price and WAY more friendly. Chuck took the time to explain the different radiators and so on and got me the correct radiator, water pump, gaskets etc.. The thermostat was wrong, and he refunded my money instantly, no questions asked. He took the cash out of his wallet and put it in my hand. Totally A+.

The completely trust these guys. Chuck runs an honest, straightforward operation. When debugging an erratic problem with my Vanagon, he displayed an amazing patience and concern to get it fixed right, including multiple free testing sessions afterward. Same experience with his work on my Toyota 4Runner. Friendly, patient, knowledgeable, efficient, reasonable prices - gads, they're close to perfect! I only wish they did a wider range of repairs than cooling systems and air conditioners.

I've taken both my cars - Chysler TC Maserati and Toyota Camry to them several times each. Absolutely terrific every time. (If you can see other reviews I've done here you may correctly surmise that I am faily demanding - praise does not come easily to me.) I especially like the frank discussion of options - I don;t like spending money on cars, but I have to feel safe and comfortable in them - so I struggle. I always feel when talking to these guys that they are there to serve my particular and perhaps peculiar needs - not to simply sell me something. They put in AC on my Chrysler - works perfectly, for years now. Replaced hoses and radiator on my Toyota - likewise. A morally and technically trustworthy owner of the highest order!
