My ex-husband, one of the many reasons we are not together, never could hear this creaking, lumbering noise in my Mitsubishi Expo. I'ts not a Camry he would say when I tried to get his opinion. I took my car for a lube/oil to Maria from a discount in the local paper ad--never been there before. As SHE was driving me to my office in town, I mentioned the noise. "Oh, yes, I hear it - it lumbers" she says. So, the next Tuesday I drop it off, she calls with the estimate of $800 for struts, front brakes, etc. Okay - do it. I think you will feel an immediate difference. "I wish I could get the price down further, but Mitsubishi controls the struts, I have called all my usual resources and they all say the same - you have to get it from the dealer. I'm sorry (she actually said this) that the price is so high." When I pick up the car that evening, she tells me that she didn't do the rotors - they really didn't need it right now, so the bill is only $680. I'm sorry we couldn't get the parts down for you." Imagine this! Then, two days later, she calls me at home and wants to know if I think there is a marked difference in the car and if there is anything not satisfactory about the work. "I rely on word of mouth for business," she says, "and customers who like the work and the garage are my highest priority." Her waiting room is comfortable, with coffee perking and magazines and HEATED. She is incredible and also teaches women how to maintain their cars once a month in a class. I have had major surgery and not gotten a follow up phonecall. I can't remember when a garage actually saved me money and didn't go for broke (my broke)on the repairs.

Okay, I'd read a glowing endorsement from a previous writer/ customer, and my first impression was, "This is too good to be true". Being adventuresome and honestly seeking an honest, competent mechanic, I placed calls to several shops for cost quotes, and it turned out OutWest's price was the best. It was time to see if the rest of the endorsement was accurate. Went there, work was performed [strut and spring replacement] as scheduled, to my complete satisfation, and all in a humane, COMMUNICATION-FRIENDLY envirnoment. Cool. Going back when I need to.

The owner and the mechanics are very competent and honest. The job was to replace fluids (transmission, transfer case, front and rear differential, brake fluid, engine oil, radiator), replace disc pads (polish rotors), and replace drum breake shoes (polish drums). They did the job very well and during the day they call me and told me the drum breakes still have 70% shoes left, so there is no need to change them. Now, how many garages, not to mention dealership services will do that!

Based on the reviews of others that I read here, I decided to give this garage a shot at servicing my Honda. Here is the report card... On the plus side: I needed an overdue service done on my car at the last minute prior to heading out for an impromptu road trip. I showed up when they opened without an appt. and they fit me in around their normal workload. Other honda based garages listed on the site had 1-2 week waits for the same service. They were very friendly and accomodating. The service was prompt, and they took time to advise me on the details. I assume that everything was done well, but as I drive a newer vehicle it is difficult to tell unless something goes REALLY wrong... As to the minuses: Their price for this routine service was higher than that which was quoted by the local dealership by about $10. It was $45 higher than the price quoted by Automotive Excellence which is another garage recommended on the CT site. To their credit they were willing to match the dealer price, but I think most people looking for independent garages are doing so because they wan't to avoid paying the dealer premiums...I don't know how they stay in business charging more! I only had one service done to date so I don't know if ALL their pricing is close to or higher than the relative to what the dealership would charge but I have to assume it would be somewhat comparable. Only other downside was the hours: Tuesday-Friday dosen't give one a lot of flexibilty to avoid work conflicts. Wish Saturdays were an option... Overall a positive experience. I would have no reservations recommending this garage to anyone who is willing/able to pay a premium for the good service they offer.

OK...this is the most fab shop in the world. The walls (and everything else) are covered with western women and nuns in odd situations. Maria has a clean waiting room with toys for the kids and a guitar (which I can remember how to play). Her last mechanic, Martha , is now working in the south pole but this is no reflection on her. These people are so nice! When I see Maria in the grocery store I bow down and Salaam. I can't wait for my next oil change. I feel like I'm getting my car fixed in Mr. Rodgers neighborhood. And she laughs at my jokes!

This garage was amazing!!! I've had my toyota to at least four different local mechanics in the past four years and non of them have worked out. Either they screwed things up, they over-priced, they talked down to me (I'm a petite woman), or they tried to insist I needed extra work done. At a complete loss for where to get my radiator repaired at a reasonable price, I looked up your website! Maria's Out West Garage emerged on the top of the list. When I read the comments, I worried that they were too good to be true, but I called her anyway. She immediately put me at ease and gave me an estimate that was $100 less than I expected. It was clear that she wasn't going to try to talk me into anything and doesn't believe in replacing things that ain't broke to begin with. She was communicative and sympathetic that I haddn't found a good local mechanic, and she was able to do the work within 24 hours. Her customer service was excellent, and I only wish I'd discovered her when I first moved into the area! I hope I never have to take my car anywhere else! This is the kind of service that you only dream about.

My civic was consuming coolant and I knew that was a bad sign, so it was time to find a garage.I chose Out West 'cause I'm new to the area, and tired of dealing with male mechanics who figure I know nothing about cars(I worked for a year as a grease monkey ,in addition to basic car repair,I learned I hate working on cars). As I'd hoped,Maria was both a good mechanic and respectful towards me.I explained my Hondas symptoms, she listened, then said a few things that might be wrong. This included the possibility that the headgasket may be blown.I didn't want to hear that and took a long walk as they inspected my car. When I returned,I learned the headgasket was blown.Having no money and no answer to how I'd afford fixing the car,I felt sick hearing the news.Maria reminded me to breath(it helped),and then articulated the fact that the gasket hadn't just blown,I'd been driving it for a few days like this, therefor I could still drive it for a little while longer(that helped too). She reminded me it's just a car, offered me a couple ideas re: how I could replace it,and told a story of a customer in a similiar situation and how she found a different vehicle. It all helped.Maria reminded me of what we use to say at the Earthworks Garage (where I worked yrs. ago),"you are not your car,you might think that you are your car,but we know you are not your car,so when you say I need new tires or I broke down or I overheated and died,we know you're not talking about yourself, wether you know it or not".Good advice I'd forgotten as was reminded of at Out West garage.I highly recommend the place!-WD

We have brought three cars - an Acura and two Hondas - to Out West over the past four years. Maria, the owner, is always at the desk when we call or come by. She happily explains recommendations for work on our cars and, equally importantly, tells us what work does not need to be done. They have a great waiting room that includes a comfy couch, high quality magazines, toys (including several versions of Woody from Toy Story), and kids books. There is a coffee house across the street and they are a few minutes walk from downtown Petaluma, making it convenient to drop off your car while shopping or going to the gym. We have always been pleased with their work and highly recommend Out West Garage.
