Ron is great! As another reviewer said, honest to a "t". He was straight-forward with all repairs, prices were very reasonable, and on the one occasion when the repair needed "repairing" he took care of it immediately (with sincere apologies). He helped me out when I was out of town and wanted to get some work done...he actually picked the car up at my house (and returned it) while I was away, and then I went in after I returned to pay for the repairs. His advice has been spot on. My only regret is his he is a small shop with limited hours and if extensive work is necessary you need to make an appointment well in advance. Sadly I have moved from the area and will no longer be able to take my car there.

When I moved from Connecticut to California a couple years ago, I regretted giving up the local garage that specialized in VWs (D & D Auto Repair, in Manchester). But a co-worker and fellow VW enthusiast told me about VW Specialties, owned and operated by Ron Wood. I'd also read about the shop in European Car magazine. (No, he's not the Ron Wood who plays lead guitar for the Rolling Stones.) My 1988 Golf still runs happily with aover 176,000 miles on it.

If you have a VW or Audi and live in Orange County, you need to know about VW Specialties. Ron and his guys will tackle anything from an oil change to an engine swap, and they'll do it quickly, proficiently and inexpensively. Anything that I don't feel like I can deal with, or don't have the time, I just call up Ron and make an appointment. He's very 'tuner-friendly' and has a good relationship with all the SoCal (and beyond) VW/Audi tuner shops and performance part manufacturers. He's also super- knowledgeable about all water-cooled VWs, even the rarest ones (like my Corrado). They're also great for emergency repairs - when my car got stuck in second gear, I just had it towed to his shop (after hours) put the keys through the mail slot and waited to hear from him. The car was back in great shape two days later, and it didn't break the bank. I dread to think what the dealer would have charged me, and how long it would have taken.. Overall, super-cool, totally friendly place where you can leave your car with them and trust them to do the work you need, and only the work you need. The only problem is that it's kinda hard to find - you'll drive past the entrance a couple of times :)

If you have a VW with a serious issue (the kind the dealer will charge you a gazillion dollars to fix and other non-dealer mechanics don't seem to be familiar with) it is worth making the trip to Ron even if you live pretty far away, as I do. I wish I lived close enough to go to VW Specialties for all my service. Ron is known as THE VW guru in southern CA.

Ron is honest to a "t". He has kept us from making unnecessary repairs when we were not sure if there was a problem, i.e., brakes. He could have easily done the work and told us that is was a necessary repair, instead, he suggested a reasonable explanation for the noise and gave us estimated usable life left on the brakes. Every encounter with Ron has been pleasant and professional. My only complaint is that his shop is kind of messy but no one is perfect.

After my VW's warranty ran out with the dealership, I went to VW Specialties to pick up the slack. So far, I have only had to take the car in for routine tune-up's but the price and service is fantastic!

Before I moved to California I was doing all the work on my '84 Jetta because I could not find a mechanic I trusted. I got fairly proficient, replacing a clutch. Ron Wood is the only guy I trust to work on the car and I drive 30 miles to go to his shop. His combination of competence, honesty and low prices is unbeatable. Not only he knows about the factory parts, but he is also very knowlegable about aftermarket parts - what works and what does not. Don't be fooled by the looks of the shop and the location, you are dealing with someone who knows VWs and Audis extremely well. He was featured in European Car magazine more times that I can count, swapping engines, transmissions, suspensions and more. He will recommend repairs that absolutely need to be done and no more. Give him a try - I think you will be pleasantly surprised and most likely you will have found the mechanic you are looking for.
