I can't thank Steve enough! He potentially saved me several thousand dollars, and in 10 minutes on the phone, solved a problem the dealer couldn't figure out for 7 days. I took our 2004 BMW 330ci to the dealer for a routine transmission fluid change with only 70,000 miles on the car. There had never been any issue whatsoever with the tranny, I just wanted to make sure it would last many more years. The next day, the tranny would not shift into any gear - completely inert - as if there were no fluid in the system. After a week, the dealer had no clue what was wrong. All they did was update the computer software. The dealer told me that they couldn't find anything wrong and that sometimes when the fluid is changed, it causes the internal seals to fail. Based on BMW's track record (see http://www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/bmw_trans.html) I feared I was being set up to buy a replacement transmission. Then Steve came to the rescue. Thank goodness I stumbled across his comment on a discussion board. He talked to me on the phone for 10 minutes & assured me that the dealer must have made a mistake and identified three possible causes for my issue, all of which are the result of sloppy workmanship. He also mentioned that the dealer's excuse of the fluid change causing a sudden failure may have been possible years ago, but not with current synthetic oils. I called the dealer and, armed with the info Steve gave me, insisted they double check their work. Sure enough, they were forced to admit that they made a mistake during the initial fluid change and there was nothing wrong with the transmission. I'm so thankful to finally solve this mystery, not to mention avoiding a replacement transmission. I'm also irritated the dealer wasted a week failing to identify their own inferior work. I wish I lived near San Diego, I would take my car to Steve at Dose every time. What a knowledgeable and gracious guy! THANK YOU!
