Was driving I10 from out of state when the "check engine soon" light came on. As I had 1000 miles to go, I reluctantly decided to have it checked out locally. Exited Banning/Beaumont, and everybody I talked to suggested Dick's, so I drove over. Even though they were busy, Bob, the owner, was checking the codes within 20 minutes. He showed me the code and spent another 20 minutes explaining exactly how the code was activated (two cold starts, engine within 10 degrees of ambient, etc). He then told me that it was a minimal vapor leak, possibly due to the recent replacement of the fuel pump (which turned out to be correct). He said it should be fine for my trip, but I should have my regular mechanic check it out at the next oil change. Then he refused to let me pay him anything. If I ever again need a mechanic in Southern California, I will drive my car or have it towed, over mountain ranges if necessary, to get to Dick's.
